📢 Invitation to “The failure of Liberal Peacebuilding in Myanmar”
Why did over a decade of internationally backed democratization and peace negotiations in Myanmar culminate in the devastating 2021 military coup?
You are cordially invited to a townhall lecture presenting the critical research of Sai Tun Aung Lwin(Payap University), which interrogates the fundamental “peace–democracy dilemma” in conflict-ridden societies. This lecture will examine how the political and economic liberalization reforms initiated in 2011 ultimately backslid into a fragile, authoritarian regime. Rather than resolving decades of civil war, liberal peace frameworks prioritized elite-driven institutional reforms and formal ceasefires while systematically overlooking deeper structural issues—such as federalism, autonomy, and local ethnic customary governance.
